Advice

I am 25 years old. My parents are very strong Christians and my sister and I have been in church all our lives. When I graduated in 1992, I started having panic attacks. I was never diagnosed but my mother said my grandmother had them. I don't want to go to the doctor because I don't want to take medication. I just pray that Jesus will put peace within me and it usually goes away (but not all the time).

Panic disorder is about anxiety. If you choose not to go the medication route, then you might as well become an expert on the topic.

Start with Worry-Free Living by Minirth, Meier and Hawkins. I also suggest you read 12 Christian Beliefs That Will Drive You Crazy by Cloud and Townsend, Things That Go Bump in the Night by Warren and Minirth and Why You Do What You Do by Bobb Beihl. There is a cognitive side to your panic disorders and as you read these books, God will give you a way to overcome. He may even show you the root of the disorder. It may take you years, but you can be living your life while you learn.

Become aware of what events or emotions are most likely to begin an attack. Remember, Satan is behind all that is ill in our world, and an unrenewed mind is a prime target, so continue with your Bible study, fellowship and prayer while you are becoming an expert in this area.
