“Stand at the crossroads and look; ask for the ancient paths, ask where the good way is, and walk in it, and you will find rest for your souls” (Jeremiah 6:16 NIV.)

Advertising proclaims a product is new and improved. Social causes or political parties announce their ideas as liberated or progressive. New technologies trumpet the advancements they have made.

The words “liberated”, “progressive” and “advanced” lead us to believe that the old ways are obsolete and can’t solve today’s problems.

Yet, this verse from Jeremiah tells us to ask for the ancient paths, not a new or improved way.

The writer of Ecclesiastes reminds us, “What has been will be again, what has been done will be done again; there is nothing new under the sun” (Ecclesiastes 1:9 NIV.) Of course, there weren’t airplanes in Solomon’s day, nor were there computers in Jesus’ time, but the innermost needs and desires of mankind haven’t changed for thousands of years.

We don’t need to be tossed about by each “new” wave of philosophy or way of thinking. God has given us a standard by which we can make decisions, a firm foundation that does not change.

God’s love for us is eternal. His provision of salvation for us happened once for all time with Jesus’ death and resurrection.

The Bible confirms God’s constancy:
“I the LORD do not change” (Malachi 3:6 NIV.)
“But You [God] remain the same, and Your years will never end” (Psalm 102:27 NIV.)
“Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever” (Hebrews 13:8 NIV.)

Don’t be distraught when men proclaim a “new” way to God. We have no need for “new and improved”. God has already shown us the best and only way to God – through God (Jesus Christ) Himself.

~Thank you God that You never change. Help me to cling to what I know is true and not be swayed by a society that says I need something new.
