An Apple a Day
Apples are one of the most common and most popular fruits we eat, with over 7000 varieties grown worldwide. Here are some tips to help you make the most of this natural, sweet treat:
Many varieties of apples can have a long life. Fruit that is unblemished, handled with care and stored in a cold environment (such as the refrigerator) can last up to six weeks.
Apples are a healthy choice: US Federal Department of Agriculture guidelines state that a medium apple contains no fat, no cholesterol, no sodium and only 8 calories. Apples are a good source of dietary fibre and a source of vitamins A and C, iron and folic acid.
When buying apples, choose firm fruit that does not dent when pressed. Apples with no deep bruises or scars will last longer.
Apples absorb odours easily, so store them away from pungent foods like garlic and onions.
Apples emit ethylene gasit is not harmful, but can cause foods such as leafy green vegetables to spoil more rapidly. Store apples in a separate compartment or in a plastic bag when they are kept in the refrigerator.
Prevent cut apples from turning brown by dipping them in lemon juice.
