Create an Inviting Family Room
by Judy ChristophersonWhat makes a family room? I think that a family room is called that because we have certain expectations associated with the name. These aspects need to be included in this space:
- We want to connect with the other people in the room.
- We need to be ourselves.
- We want to participate in favorite pastimes-- watching the football game, playing cards, reading a good book or engaging in "catch-up" conversation of the day.
- We want to feel comfortable in a warm and inviting space.
- Soft, large chairs that we can relax in, possibly a sofa or a lounge to lie on. Furniture that is durable that can take day-to-day stress.
- Enough seating so that everyone has a place with extra large floor cushions just in case more than the usual number of people come into the room.
- Placement of furniture in groups so that conversation can be intimate. Nothing more than ten feet from the rest of the conversation group, for sure.
- Enough appropriate tables to put coffee cups on. Tables to play games on.
- A television with a cabinet, preferably with doors so it can be closed off when not in use.
- A rug to curl toes in.
- A fireplace for warmth and atmosphere.
- Lighting which is appropriately placed and which can be adjusted for function. For example, bright directed lighting for reading or games, dimmer lighting for television viewing or conversation.Windows that add natural light during the day with appropriate draping so that the light can be controlled.
- Storage units for books, games, toys and collectibles. Some which can be closed to hide clutter.
- Warm, inviting colors which draw everyone into the room and invite them to stay.
