Take the Bite Out of PC Theft

by Tim Talevich, Associate Editor, The Costco Connection

The growth in popularity of portable computers is leading to growth in another industry - computer theft. In a report earlier this year, MSNBC reported that 265,000 portable computers were stolen in 1996. According to Safeware - an insurer of personal computers - US$1.4 billion in note book PCs were stolen that year, representing a 28 per cent increase from 1995. And the FBI reports that 90 per cent of stolen computer equipment is never recovered.

Fortunately, there are ways of fighting back. Here are steps to take to prevent theft or, at least, mitigate its impact:

  • Before travelling, back up your data and store it safely. This includes documents and programs.
  • For your hardware, use notebook alarms and locks. Also, consider an insurance policy that offers next-day replacement.
  • Label your portable computer and its bag with your name and address.
  • When travelling, beware of distractions such as a tap on your shoulder by a stranger, a bump by another traveller, commotion at security checkpoints and someone asking for directions. Professional thieves typically dress well - or in disguise - and rarely look suspicious.
  • Keep your portable computer with you, within sight. Never leave it on luggage carts, shuttle bus luggage racks or security checkpoints. In bathrooms, don't lean the computer on the door or against the wall.
