One in four women in the world suffers abuse.

Winnie Bartel of Christian Women Concerns says, "We truly believe it is our obligation and responsibility to expose this great evil so that good should come from laying this out before the people of God and the world."

Hebrews 4:13 tells us that "Nothing in all creation is hidden from God's sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of Him to whom we must give account."

Just as God is exposing the evils of injustice and suffering around the world, we need to shine His light on the darkness in our own midst. Allow God to expose any injustices or abuse where you are.

Please pray, as you consider some of the facts that have been brought to light:

• Gender violence causes more death and disability among women aged 15 to 44 than cancer, malaria, traffic accidents or war.

• In Russia, 14,000 women die each year at the hands of their husbands or other family members.

• In Jordan, there are approximately 25 cases of honor killings each year.

• One in four women in South Africa are survivors of domestic assualt.

• In Costa Rica, there were 28 femicides in 1998 and an average of 85 calls per day at the Judicial Office regarding violence against women.

• It is estimated that one in every four women in Asia are abused at some point in their life.

• In 1995, the Indian government reported 7,300 "dowry deaths," where a young woman is murdered by her husband when he is unsatisfied with the dowry.

• Almost one in three women in Canada and the United States have been the victims of some form of sexual or physical abuse at the hands of someone they knew and trusted.

• Twenty-four percent of American women have been injured through physical abuse at some point in their life.

• Over 500,000 women in the United States report a rape or sexual assault each year, of which only one in five are committed by strangers.
