Outstanding Outreach to Women
It's been a time since I had looked at Women Today Magazine and I was amazed by how much material is now on the site. 800 pages in fact! Why is this outreach so effective?
- attractive, clear, uncluttered page design
- enticing links that make you want to click
- uncomplicated navigation: you can tell where you are and where you can go
- matches the style of a secular women's magazine (without any drivel)
- visitors are made to feel at home
- professional, clear writing by experts
- short, concise pages
- plenty of white space around text with frequent paragraphs
- writing has been carefully edited, revised, checked and proof-read
- avoidance of Christian jargon
- no preachiness, no gushing sentimentality
- no cringe-making giveaway mission statements which say something like "we are Bible-believing Christians trying to get you all you non-Christian women converted"
- no Christian graphics that would make the site look "churchy": there is not a cross, dove, stained glass window, church or angel to be seen
- it assumes that readers have zero knowledge of Christian concepts and terminology
- total identity with real women, their feelings and interests
- genuinely useful advice on 100s of real everyday problems as well as deeper personal needs
- some pages, addressing a secular topic, make no mention of faith at all (except via their links) - they just offer useful wise advice
- others, where the topic naturally allows it, bring in faith also
- the challenging gospel content is via the international testimonies, the low-key links on spirituality (including one via a popup) and the changing top-of-page banner
- monthly email newsletter
- the numerous pages on different topics are all logical entry points via a search engine or another link, and pull in visitors looking for help on those subjects. Having arrived at such page, it is easy to navigate to other sections
- it's also in French - it would be wonderful to see it in many other languages, too
- international flavor: deliberately not just North American
- note the "email this page to a friend" option: a useful way to increase visitors
This site is an exemplar of effective communication strategy and "bridge" evangelism. Quite frankly, sites don't get much better than this.
Make use of it -- not just by learning from the style and design, but by linking. Because there are so many pages on particular topics, any time you need a link on parenting, or marriage, or living with a flatmate, or cooking, (or many more...) make a link direct to that page. The site design favors this. Why not make a women's area on your church website, for example, with links to this site. Or even link to it via a narrow top frame (how to: http://www.web-evangelism.com/framecode.txt ) so that it becomes an integral women's section of your site.
This is the precisely what the web is good at--bringing world-class material into your site without you writing it.
